Hi, I'm Patrick. I am a sound artist and guitarist.
In the 80s and 90s I played in a series of bands, starting with a high-school punk band in 1984 and concluding with a contemporary music game-score collective and movement artists.
Nowadays I make solo music and play (usually guitar) with other improvisers. Some recent performances, all in Portland Oregon:
2 Sep 2026, Patrick Barber solo noise set alongside three other Portland solo noiseists. At Turn Turn Turn.
1 Sep 2026, Emmet Martin and Patrick Barber played a set opening for visiting artist Ryan Seward. At Word Virus Books. Here's a clip from that set.
21 June 2026, Summer Improvisers Summit, curated by Caspar Sonnet. At Word Virus Books.
12 Jun 2026, Patrick sat in with Black Ends for a song. What a blast! At Six Below Midnight.
4 Apr 2026, Patrick sat in with K/S/R for a piece during their show at the Wyrd Hut.
25 Feb 2026, Patrick Barber solo synth set at Dream House, opening for Garrett Foster Brown.
Some of the bands I played in back in the 20th century:
Expatriate: a Colorado-based punk band veering into powerviolence vibes. 1987–1989
Blowhole: A long-lived free-music collective founded by artist Jeph Jerman. I was in the group from 1990 till 1998.
Lab Rat: My solo noise ventures. 1989–1998.
Stymie: A proto-grunge band made up of industry hacks. We got a lot of shows because we knew a lot of booking agents. But it turns out we were also really good! Check out our newly remastered album Toil & Folly. 1992–1997
I am also releasing archival and new music through my small publishing company Impeller Press.
